Josh Jung Placed On 10 Day IL, Ornelas Recalled

The Texas Rangers will be down their starting third baseman for at least the next ten days.

On Sunday morning, the Rangers announced that Josh Jung would be placed on the 10-day IL with neck spasms.

Jonathan Ornelas has been recalled from AAA Round Rock to give the Rangers an extra infielder while Jung is on the IL and while they figure out what Josh Smith’s injury situation is after he left last night’s game with a quad contusion.

Jung has been dealing with neck issues since the team left Arizona and returned to Texas. During Monday’s exhibition against the Royals, Jung was pulled, taking one less AB than the rest of the Rangers regulars.

On Tuesday, Jung was scheduled to play but then was scratched from the lineup due to the same issues.

After playing on Opening Day on Thursday, Jung’s neck stiffened up on him during Friday’s game when he made a sliding stop to prevent a run-scoring base hit.

After already being without Jung, last night saw Smith run into the wall trying to make a play on a foul ball.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said on Sunday morning that the hope is that Smith can play tomorrow when the team opens a three-game set in Cincinnati.

For now, Ezequiel Duran will get the bulk of the work over at third base. As for Ornelas, he doesn’t have to wait long to get into action, as he will be at shortstop on Sunday.
