Jaden Ivey Injury Report: Impact Upon Return

Jaden Ivey has been medically cleared to resume basketball activities and will be begin the reconditioning period. This is in preparation for a possible return before the Piston’s season officially ends. The Postseason begins on 4/19, meaning that the two week timeline puts him in position to return if the Pistons can get out of the first round. With the likelihood of Ivey returning to the court looking to be a much more high, we will look at the impact good and bad that he can have by returning to the floor.

On the good side of things, Ivey will be an excellent offensive spark to the team. If he comes back as a start he’ll be a good option for Cade to defer to, He can create off the dribble and get a bucket, or manufacture opportunities for others. Ivey was enjoying a career year in points per game, 3 point shooting percentage, as well as overall shooting percentage before his injury. Ivey is also a player that gets to the line at a decent clip, falling in the 75th percentile of free-throw rate. With his electric athleticism he would only improve a team that ranks 2nd in the league in fast break points and 10th in overall pace.

Now to touch on the not so positive side of Ivey’s return. Offensively, he ranks very below average in the way of portability, which in short is his ability to fit around other players. This is due to his limited abilities of causing impact on the game when the ball is not in his hands. In addition to that, although he is a very good creator, he is quite prone to turning the ball over. An issue that plagued the Pistons for a lot of last year.  Defensively, Ivey rates in the below average category. Despite his elite athleticism, he provides little impact in the way of creating turnovers. He is quite limited versatility wise, mostly only being equipped to take on guards, even though he measures in at 6’3 and a half with a 6’9 wingspan.

All in all, Ivey could be a major pick me up. If nothing else in the way of morale. He provides several attributes that the Pistons have lacked throughout his hiatus. JB Bickerstaff will be tasked with the job of keeping the chemistry aligned, while implementing him back into the fold as they try to make a legitimate playoff push. Stay tuned to FFSN with any new updates to Ivey’s Status
