“Fire Nico!” “Fire Nico!” “Fire Nico!” If you were in attendance for one of the final 70+ games of the Dallas Mavericks 2024-25 season, then you probably heard this chant echo throughout the American Airlines Center. You probably experienced the utter disdain, and hatred, that the city of Dallas has for the man in charge; Nico Harrison.

This man has made Mavs fans utterly FURIOUS……and rightfully so. He moved on from their leading man, Luka Doncic, in one of the most outrageous and egregious trades in the history of the league. He sent the star of their team, and the man who lead them to the NBA Finals last year, PACKING……in exchange for a bunch of old parts, and a bundle of toothpicks.

Nico has been an absolute CALAMITY for this organization. And now? When asked about how he’s doing with the team? Well….it looks like the man in the ivory tower thinks rather highly of himself.

Ok, I get it; this is one of those “what do you expect him to say” type of moments. It’s almost like when you ask a player who they think should win the MVP during the season, when obviously……they are going to say themselves. Not only that; Nico has a job that he needs to protect. If he didn’t say anything positive in that moment, then he would’ve looked like a bigger horses-buttocks than he already does.

But to hear this man say this, after what he’s put the Mavs through over the past number of months……has to be one of the biggest “slaps in the face” in the history of sports. I mean; I’m not even a Dallas fan, and I can still feel it from here. This is the same man who reportedly “miscalculated” how much Luka meant to the city, and the franchise as a whole. He’s one of those people who either shouldn’t be a GM because he’s too incompetent, or he actually knew what he was doing and is just covering his tracks.

It’s absolutely ridiculous! This team went from a 50-32 record and a “seat at the table” last season, to a play-in exit this season. They went from having (basically) a unicorn on their team who could put up 25-30 on any given night, to a collection of old bike parts and a draft pick that they won’t see in 5 years.

Simply put; if ANYONE in their right mind believes that Nico Harrison is doing a “good job” with the Dallas Mavericks, then they need to reassess their life choices. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror, and they need to ask themselves……”am i an intelligent person?” The only REAL “good decision” that this man has made was drafting Luka, and after he INTENTIONALLY traded him away…..it just proved that he is OBVIOUSLY not fit for this job.

But the question though is…….is Nico on the outs? Is this the straw that will break the camel’s back? Sadly…..I don’t think so. He just signed a contract extension in the summer of 2024, after the Mavs went to the Finals against the Boston Celtics. They’re locked into him for multiple years, which leads me to believe that they’re not cutting ties with him any time soon.

However……there’s most likely a target on Nico’s back now. It doesn’t matter if the people above Nico signed off on Luka’s move, or not. The amount of hate that he and the franchise are currently receiving is just insurmountable. And if they start losing like they did at the end of this season…..then it’s only a matter of time before he is shown the door.

But as always, what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
