Holliday Road: Grand Slam Powers Baltimore’s Rout of Cleveland Guardians
Jackson Holliday’s grand slam in the second inning led the Baltimore Orioles to a 9-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old Holliday is a highly touted prospect at second base who had a slow start to his career last year.
Breaking an 0-for-17 slump, he staked the Orioles to a 4-0 lead against Guardians’ starter Gavin Williams (1-1).
Gabriel Arias continued his hot start for Cleveland with a solo homer in the third inning off Dean Kremer (2-2).
Arias has four homers and is batting .288. He is solidifying his hold on the second base job like Brayan Rocchio did at shortstop last year.
REMEMBER ME?
Ramon Laureano, who spent time with the Guardians last season, hit a solo homer in the seventh to increase the Orioles’ lead to 5-1.
Despite the lopsided score, Cleveland had a chance to tie the game with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.
However, Angel Martinez hit a grounder to pitcher Yennier Cano, who threw home to start a double play.
Baltimore bombed Triston McKenzie for another four runs in the eighth, including a solo homer by Ryan Mountcastle.
RUBBER MATCH
Tonight’s matchup will settle the three-game series, as Baltimore hasn’t won a series yet this season.
Tanner Bibee (1-1) will start for the Guardians against Tomoyuki Sugano (1-1) for the Orioles. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
