Hero of the Game: Jose Ramirez Bashes Three Homers In Cleveland Guardians’ Win
Major League Baseball recently debuted a Japanese-style anime commercial called “Heroes of the Game.”
Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Paul Skenes, and Juan Soto are portrayed with superhuman abilities to appeal to a younger audience.
Jose Ramirez shows up at the end in a “one guy from each team” group photo, but he played like a hero last night.
Three homers from Ramirez’s bat powered the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels last night in Anaheim.
A crowd of 44,749 celebrated the opening of team’s 60th year at Angel Stadium.
STAR vs. STAR
Mike Trout was in the commercial, too. Ramirez hit a solo homer in the first inning, and the Angels slugger responded in kind.
Cleveland took the lead back in the second inning when Brayan Rocchio doubled to score Gabriel Arias.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams only lasted three innings. He was pulled after the Angels went up 4-2 on an RBI single by Nolan Schanuel and a two-run single by Jo Adell.
COMEBACK KIDS
Ramirez struck again in the fifth inning with a two-run homer to tie the game 4-4.
Rocchio gave Cleveland the lead with a two-run single in the sixth to score Kyle Manzardo and Bo Naylor.
Manzardo’s sacrifice fly in the seventh increased the Cleveland advantage to 7-4.
Ramirez tacked on his third homer in the ninth. His 26th multi-homer game tied the Cleveland record with Albert Belle and Jim Thome.
BULLPEN ON PARADE
Meanwhile, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt kept bringing in relievers who each pitched one scoreless inning.
This list included Jakob Junis, Tim Herrin, Cade Smith, Paul Sewald and Hunter Gaddis.
Emmanuel Clase didn’t have the same success. He gave up a solo homer to Logan O’Hoppe and an RBI double to Adell before finally putting the Halos away.
The series will continue today at 9:38 p.m. Eastern. Tanner Bibee will start for the Guardians against the Angels’ Jack Kochanowicz.
