Have the Bruins Become the Least Appealing Team in Boston?
Usually my articles are deep dive context articles where my opinions are backed by facts due to the underlying analytics. Instead, this article is more of an opinion, but has facts just based on what’s on the surface.
The City of Boston has plenty of competitive teams and the goal is to always win a championship. The Celtics just had a parade this past summer, so they did give the fans something to be joyous about. As a Bruins fan and the state of that franchise, it does beg the question, have they become the least appealing team in the city among the four major sports? The Fleet will always be appealing because the PWHL absolutely rules and their ability to have sell out crowds is truly great for the game of Hockey. But let’s compare them to the Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots.
The Comparable Draws for Each Team
So, let’s take a look real fast at the other four teams and their appeal levels.
The Celtics could very well repeat as NBA Champions. They brought back that entire group that won last year and have the second best record in the entire conference. In addition, they have the third best record in the entire league. They are still a dominant force that is led by super star Jayson Tatum. When all is said and done, the Celtics will be playing for a championship and should easily reach the conference finals.
The Patriots had an abysmal season under rookie head coach Jerod Mayo. However, they did get a good glimpse at Drake Maye, who has proven he is the real deal. Now, it’s time to build around that. The appeal around them is the fact that they have their quarterback of the future. Furthermore, they brought in former linebacker Mike Vrabel as the head coach and proven offensive coordinator in Josh McDaniels. It’s a legitimate staff and for a club that has the most money to spend in free agency and the fourth overall pick, the future is bright. If they make the right moves, the sky is the limit especially in the NFL.
The Red Sox have been the laughing stock for the last several seasons. After reaching the ALCS in 2021, they’ve suffered two last place finishes and finishing .500 last season. They’ve spent hardly any money and the Red Sox being a destination for free agents was virtually non-existent. Until now.
The front office has now done something they haven’t done in years. Be aggressive. This is a team that now has the appeal and should draw the casual fans back into the fold. They used their farm system to land their ace in Garrett Crochet. They signed Walker Buehler and Aroldis Chapman. And best of all, they lured in Alex Bregman, who was one of the top free agents this baseball season. Also, the youth is coming and coming fast. The top prospect in all of baseball with Roman Anthony is on the way as well as Kristian Campbell. The Red Sox are so back and their appeal for the present and future is huge.
With all this being said, how do the Bruins compare and why are they the least appealing?
Are the Bruins the least Appealing?
Honestly, yes I believe the Bruins are the least appealing. Were the Patriots bad? Oh yes. But is the future bright that can translate to a strong present? Yes. The Red Sox have been bad, but after this offseason, they’ll garner plenty of attention, which will take away from the Bruins.
The Bruins have been an utter mess this season. They have a -25 goal differential, rank in the bottom ten in every offensive category, then special teams play is atrocious, and their direction remains unknown. The Bruins are stuck in the worst spot you can be and that’s right in the middle. They aren’t soooo bad to where they need to tear everything down to the studs, but they are not good enough to where you push your chips into the middle of the table.
They still have good talent on this roster with David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, and Charlie McAvoy. The core around them is also stable, but the contracts to Nikita Zadorov and Elias Lindholm look really bad right now.
They need a very strong offseason and big changes are likely coming. They aren’t like the Patriots and Red Sox where youth is on the way and can change the course around. Hockey is also very different. But given how the 2024-25 season has gone, the Bruins might be the least appealing team of the four sports.
