Elimination Chamber Flashback: Shawn Michaels Wins the World Title (2002)

Elimination Chamber has become a major stop on the Road to WrestleMania.

The Royal Rumble kicks off the journey, as the winners of the men’s and women’s Rumbles claim their title shots.

But with men’s and women’s titles on each of the two brands, the Elimination Chamber determines who gets the other two title shots at the Showcase of Immortals.

The Chamber is a unique rounded steel cage that includes four pods. The match starts with two wrestlers in the ring and the other four waiting in the pods.

Every five minutes, a new wrestler is released from a pod to join the match.

This introduces the same “luck of the draw” concept as the Rumble, where the last wrestler to enter the match has an advantage.

THE FIRST CHAMBER

Eric Bischoff introduced the Elimination Chamber at the 2002 Survivor Series when he was running the Raw brand.

Triple H defended his World title in the bout against Kane, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Shawn Michaels, and Rob Van Dam.

HHH started the match against RVD. Jericho and Booker were the next two entries.

Booker pinned Van Dam after a missile dropkick, but he got eliminated by a Lionsault from Chris Jericho.

Kane came in fifth and teed off on Jericho and Triple H, with Michaels coming in last.

The Big Red Machine was bounced out of the match after HHH, HBK, and Y2J all hit him with their big moves.

SWEET REVENGE

Michaels pinned Jericho after a Sweet Chin Music superkick, setting up a final showdown with Triple H.

Remember, Michaels had returned from a four-year layoff to defeat HHH at SummerSlam 2002. Triple H attacked him with a sledgehammer after the match.

Michaels gained revenge by pinned Triple H after Sweet Chin Music to win the World championship.

In addition to completing his comeback, Michaels gained the distinction of winning the first Elimination Chamber and the first Hell in a Cell match.
