Early-Season AL Power Rankings
The MLB season is well underway and teams are beginning to show what they are going to be.
The American League came in with lower expectations than the National League due to teams being at a low point. Of course, there are many teams that will be able to contend when it is all said and done.
Below, check out the early-season AL rankings:
- New York Yankees: The Yankees have not found their identity just yet. The pitching has struggled and the lineup is inconsistent. New York remains at the top of the American League with all of these imperfections.
- Detroit Tigers: Detroit has plenty of optimism this season. The Tigers recently took two from New York and are looking to continue its play from the end of last season.
- Texas Rangers: It was a down year for the Rangers in 2024 but Texas could be more this year if the ship is righted. It begins with Jacob deGrom, who is off to a brutal start this season.
- Boston Red Sox: Boston has been a model of inconsistency this season. With the current make up of the roster, this might be a trend over the course of 162 games.
- Baltimore Orioles: Baltimore has not pitched well to this point of the season. They are 13th in runs scored and are not hitting for power. The Orioles are in the middle of the league and need more to compete in the AL East.
- Cleveland Guardians: Emmanuel Clase has struggled but the Guardians have been able to keep their heads above water. Get the All-Pro closer back to normal and Cleveland is back in the mix.
- Toronto Blue Jays: The Blue Jays finally got the Vlad Guerrero Jr. extension done. A star has committed to Toronto long term and this is exactly what the franchise needed.
- Los Angeles Angels: Are the Angels back? Los Angeles has gotten off to a decent start and might be able to contend for a postseason spot. The question is, will this start be sustainable?
- Houston Astros: Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez remain in the mix. Houston has shipped away many pieces in recent years. The dynasty might be over but the Astro name still carries weight.
- Seattle Mariners: The Mariners continue to have an elite pitching staff and a decent lineup but there is no real way to take that next step this season.
- Kansas City Royals: Kansas City is near the bottom of the league in runs scored this season. Jonathan India left a recent game with an injury. The Royals seem back to Earth after a surprise season in 2024.
- Tampa Bay Rays: Tampa has a bright future with a strong farm system but the Major League team does not have many hopes for this season in a strong AL East.
- Oakland A’s: The A’s are in West Sacramento for this season. There are a few good pieces in the lineup and Luis Severino at the top of the rotation. The new-look A’s might be able to compete in a few years but remain near the bottom for now.
- Minnesota Twins: The Twins have not been able to hit and this has led to a 5-12 start. Carlos Correa is below the interstate, along with many others. Minnesota has carried over from the collapse of last season.
- Chicago White Sox: The White Sox remain in the basement of the American League and the league as a whole. Luis Robert is on the roster still but count down the days until that changes.
