Eagles OC Kellen Moore Is Heading To New Orleans

GO BIRDS!!! That’s what a majority of the country has been SCREAMING over the past number of days, as they prepare for today’s Super Bowl match-up between the Eagles and the Chiefs. It has become the battle-cry of every real football fan in America, with folks backing the birds to hopefully vanquish the “Fighting Taylor Swifts” out of Kansas City.

It’s a monumental moment for the city of Philadelphia. But with the game on the horizon, it looks like one member of the green and white will have something else in the back of their mind.

That’s right, football fans; Philadelphia Eagles’ OC Kellen Moore is reportedly being linked to the New Orleans Saints’ Head Coaching job, and was apparently already making calls to set up his staff prior to this week’s Super Bowl preparation. If this works out, he will become the team’s fifth HC since the year 2000; joining the likes of Jim Haslett, Sean Payton, Dennis Allen, and Darren Rizzi.

Moore, who never really made an impact as a QB in the league, helped lead three offenses to Top-10 finishes in his six seasons as an offensive coordinator. He will take over a very desperate New Orleans squad that has a TON of question marks at QB, a receiving core that doesn’t really have any “superstar” caliber names, and an All-Pro RB in Alvin Kamara who was BASICALLY their offense last year.

To some, this sounds like a good spot for the man to be in. With the Saints’ QB position being sort-of “up in the air” this off-season, and Derek Carr reportedly being “on the outs” at some point; the idea of a young coach like Moore coming in to start a rebuild could be the ‘kick in the pants’ that this team needs. Not only that; if the Saints do end up going with a younger QB moving forward, the thought of having an offensive-minded HC in charge to help develop him could be beneficial to the team as a whole.

The only problem that I (and some Saints fans) may have with this move…..is with Moore’s play-calling over the years. I mean granted; the man has had success with the likes of Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts under center. But now he’s transitioning into an uncharted territory. He’s about to be the “Top Dog” in charge, leading an offense that’s nowhere NEAR the units that he’s used to.

So because of that, plays like this one from a number of years ago…

They’re not going to cut it moving forward. He’s not going to be able to get away with the ‘creative’ and ‘cutesy’ plays of yesteryear, that he could (sometimes) pull off because of the high-level talent that he had at his disposal. He’s going to need to adopt the phrase “keep it simple, stupid” for the first few years, until he starts to get into a groove with his new squad.

Simply put; there are A LOT of pros and cons when it comes to his hiring, and there are going to be A LOT of opinions from the ‘talking heads’ in the media moving forward. But in the end, if I have to put this entire situation into ‘layman’s terms,’ I think the best way to explain Kellen Moore is “low risk, high reward.”

This team is not going to be a contender any time soon. Unless they can find a gem in the draft, or bring in a QB that no one is expecting; I can see this being a rough journey for the folks down south. Sure, they do play in one of the weakest divisions in football. But in the end….this is going to be a process, that may work out for them in the end.

Here hoping for the best for a fellow Kellen. But in the end, as always….what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
