Did The NBA Get The All Star Replacements Right?

On Monday, the NBA announced the replacements for the injured two all-stars who will not be able to participate in the upcoming all-star weekend.

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is dealing with a left calf strain and will miss about a week.

Antetokoumpo will be replaced by Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young who is averaging 23.4 points and a league-leading 11.4 assists per contest.

When it comes to the Western Conference, new Dallas Maverick Anthony Davis is replaced by his teammate Kyrie Irving who is putting up a strong 24, 4, and 5.

All-Star season always brings out talk about snubs and injury replacements are no different, let’s break down whether or not Adam Silver got these replacements right.

For starters, it’s important to establish that no one should be complaining about Young and Irving being all-stars.

Both players are having phenomenal seasons and without a doubt are playing at an all-star level.

On the Eastern conference side of things, it’s hard to argue with Trae Young being the choice to replace Antetokoumpo.

Young’s 23.4 points and 11.4 assists alone should be enough to justify it. If a guy is leading the league in assists while averaging almost 25 points, he’s deserving of an all-star nod.

With LaMelo Ball being injured and Tyrese Maxey’s 76ers severely underachieving, there is no competition.

When it comes to Irving in the West, there is certainly some debate to be had about whether he was the right choice.

Anytime three guys deserve one spot in the All-Star game, it’s always tough but the Kings Domantas Sabonis and the Suns Devin Booker both have worthy cases.

Sabonis has become the first player in NBA history to average 20+ points, 12+ rebounds, and 5+ assists without making the All-Star game.

Booker got off to a slow start due to injury and his struggle when he was on the floor probably cost him an all-star spot.

If you threw the first 10-15 games out, Booker is easily somewhere in the All-Star game and the Suns are probably in better shape.
At the end of the day, both Young and Irving are more than deserving of All-Star spots and like there always are, there will be snub debates but there will always be more all-star deserving players than all-star spots.
