Cubs sweep A’s in Sacramento
The Chicago Cubs finished off a three-game sweep of the Oakland/Sacramento/Las Vegas A’s on Thursday with a 10-2 win. The A’s are playing this season at Sutter Health Park, and the Cubs hitters really enjoyed their time there. They scored a total of 35 runs in the three-game series highlighted by 18 runs on Monday night. Catcher Carson Kelly became the first Cub to hit for the cycle since Mark Grace did it on May 9th, 1993. That game also saw home runs from Dansby Swanson, Kyle Tucker, and Michael Busch.
Chicago’s lowest offensive output of the series came on Tuesday when they put up just seven runs. Seiya Suzuki hit a monster 445-foot home run in that game off of the batter’s eye in center field. Tucker also homered and doubled in that game. It was Tucker’s fourth straight game with a home run. As an aside, if the Cubs do not do everything possible to sign Tucker to a long-term extension either during or after the season, there should be an uprising against Tom Ricketts.
In the series finale on Wednesday, Chicago scored 10 runs with two more homers from Suzuki. They also got two hits each from Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Matt Shaw.
The Cubs also got really good starting pitching in the series. The trio of Ben Brown, Justin Steele, and Jameson Taillon combined to pitch 17.2 innings, nine earned runs, and 18 strikeouts.
Chicago has the toughest schedule of any team in baseball in April. They need to take advantage of the weaker teams on the schedule when they have the chance. They did just that in this series to get above .500 for the first time this season. The Cubs have their home opener at Wrigley Field against the San Diego Padres on Friday at 1:20.
