Cleveland Guardians Win Long-Ball Battle with Kansas City Royals
Spring training fans enjoyed a barrage of home runs as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5 yesterday in Surprise, Ariz.
Just like they did on Friday against Seattle, the Guardians fell into an early hole before rallying to victory.
Cleveland starter Triston McKenzie pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs.
Former Rookie of the Year Jonathan India hit a leadoff home run for the Royals.
Bobby Witt Jr. singled and scored on a double by Freddy Fermin, giving the Royals a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Royals third baseman Jordan Groshans hit an RBI double in the third, and Vinnie Pasquantino’s solo homer gave KC a 4-0 advantage after three innings.
CALL IT ANOTHER COMEBACK
Cleveland finally got the bats going in the sixth inning. Kyle Manzardo blasted a two-run homer. He is hitting .412 this spring.
Gabriel Arias added a solo homer in the seventh. He is making a play for the second-base job, and a .250 batting average might be enough to win it.
Jose Ramirez joined the party with a two-run bomb, giving Cleveland a 5-4 lead in the seventh.
Angel Martinez, another candidate for the second-base position, added solo homer in the eighth. He’s batting .172.
The Royals cut the lead to 6-5 in the eighth, but Cleveland scored in the ninth on a single by right fielder Alfonsin Rosario.
The Guardians will travel to Phoenix today to play the Milwaukee Brewers at 4:10 p.m. Eastern.
