Cleveland Guardians’ Starters Excel in 8-1 Victory Over Los Angeles Angels
Opening Day is three weeks away, but the Cleveland Guardians conducted an early dress rehearsal on Tuesday afternoon.
Fielding their regular starting lineup, the Guardians pounded the Angels 8-1.
Cleveland’s bats didn’t get warmed up until the sixth inning, when the Guardians’ four-run outburst erased a 1-0 deficit.
Lane Thomas tied the game with a based-loaded single. Johnathan Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly.
Bo Naylor’s single increased the Guardians’ lead to 3-1. Kahlil Watson completed the rally by scoring from third on a wild pitch.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL
Cleveland scored three more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by third baseman Will Wilson and a two-run homer by Yordys Valdes.
Jhonkensy Noel wrapped up the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
ENCOURAGING PITCHING
Gavin Williams, one of the Guardians’ top three starters, struck out six batters in 2 1/3 innings.
Logan Allen bolstered his resume by pitching three shutout innings. He is trying to reclaim his spot in the starting rotation.
The back end of the bullpen looked strong, too. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, and Tim Herrin combined to pitch three more shutout innings.
BAD NEWS FOR CHASE
Chase DeLauter, one of the Guardians’ top prospects, has suffered another injury. He will be out for eight to 12 weeks with a hernia.
DeLauter was Cleveland’s top pick in the 2022 draft. The outfielder battled through injuries to his left foot and right toe last year.
The Guardians have a day off before hosting the Arizona Diamondback on Thursday at 8:05 p.m. Eastern.
