Cleveland Guardians Starter Struggles Again in 6-4 Loss to Colorado Rockies
Luis Ortiz is supposed to be one of the Cleveland Guardians’ top three starting pitchers this season since he arrived from Pittsburgh.
So far, not so good.
Ortiz dropped to 0-3 with a 12.66 ERA in a 6-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Sure, it’s still spring training, but Opening Day is less than two weeks away.
HIGH ALTITUDE?
Ortiz gave up four runs in 3 2/3 innings, all from the mighty bat of Colorado catcher Jacob Stallings.
He hit a solo homer in the second inning and connected with a three-run bomb in the fourth.
Maybe he’s already dreaming about hitting into the thin air at Coors Field in Denver.
Paul Sewald struck out three in the fifth inning to lower his spring ERA to 8.31.
Hunter Gaddis gave up a two-run homer to center fielder Jordan Beck in the sixth.
Cade Smith followed by pitching a scoreless inning.
NINTH-INNING ACTION
The Guardians exploded for four runs in the ninth to make things interesting.
Jhonkensy Noel singled to score Micah Pries and Johnathan Rodriguez.
Backup catcher Dom Nunez followed with a 401-foot homer to right-center field.
Cleveland will host the Seattle Mariners today at 4:05 p.m. Eastern in Goodyear, Ariz.
