Cleveland Guardians Split Squads Lose to Athletics, Angels

With Opening Day one week away, the Cleveland Guardians are making final roster decisions.

On the field, the Guardians lost a pair of split-squad games on Wednesday.

Most of Cleveland’s starting lineup stayed home in Goodyear, as the wandering Athletics scored an 8-3 victory.

Gavin Williams started on the mound for Cleveland. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up three runs.

Brent Rooker put the A’s on the board with a two-run homer in the third inning.

Cleveland fired back with three runs in the fourth. Bo Naylor doubled to score Lane Thomas. Naylor came home on single by Will Brennan.

Juan Brito, who is making a late play for the second-base job, hit a double. Brennan scored on a throwing error.

The A’s scored six more runs in the ensuing innings to walk off with the victory. Four of their eight runs were unearned.

ANGELS WIN

Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels used a five-run burst in the eighth inning to beat the rest of the Guardians 6-3 in Tempe, Ariz.

The good news for Cleveland is that Logan Allen delivered another strong performance. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and a run while striking out six.

Allen might regain the spot in the starting rotation that he lost in 2024.

Angel Martinez put Cleveland on top in the second inning with a single to score Gabriel Arias.

Angels left fielder Taylor Ward tied the game in the third with a single, and the 1-1 score held up until the eighth.

Cleveland’s Micah Pries continued his huge spring with a two-run homer to give the Guardians a 3-1 lead.

However, the Angels scored five in the eighth off Cade Smith and Steven Perez to secure the victory.

The Guardians will take Thursday off before visiting the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale, Ariz. Game time on Friday is 4:05 Eastern.
