Cleveland Guardians Set Rotation; Questions Remain at Second Base and Right Field
Logan Allen nailed down the fifth spot in the Cleveland Guardians’ starting rotation with an outstanding spring.
Triston McKenzie will start the season in the bullpen.
Statistically, manager Stephen Vogt had an easy decision. Allen’s spring ERA was 1.85, while McKenzie’s was 7.50.
Allen will join Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Luis Ortiz, and Ben Lively in the starting rotation.
WHAT ABOUT …?
Vogt hasn’t named a starter at second base. Gabriel Arias and Daniel Schneemann are the last two contenders after Tyler Freeman was traded to Colorado.
The Rockies sent Nolan Jones back home to the Guardians. We’ll see how Jones fits into the right-field picture with Jhonkensy Noel and Will Brennan.
REDS 13, GUARDIANS 2
The Guardians didn’t have a great day on the field on Sunday, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 13-2.
Former Pittsburgh Pirate Vince Velasquez started for Cleveland, and he gave up an RBI double to Elly De La Cruz in the first inning.
Later, De La Cruz scored on a wild pitch by Velasquez.
Another Velasquez performed much better for the Guardians, as 19-year-old Ralphy socked a solo homer in the third inning.
Unfortunately, the roof caved in on Cleveland reliever Kolby Allard, who surrendered eight runs in 2 1/3 innings.
After falling behind by a dozen runs, the Guardians got one back in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by catcher John Ingle.
Cleveland will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at 9:40 p.m. Eastern. The regular season will start on Thursday in Kansas City.
