Cleveland Guardians’ Second-Base Battle Is Down to Three Candidates

Daniel Schneemann, Gabriel Arias, and Tyler Freeman are the final three competitors to become the Cleveland Guardians’ new second baseman.

The team sent Angel Martinez and Juan Brito to the Columbus Clippers minor-league team.

All three players will make the squad, as whoever doesn’t win the job will serve as backups in the infield and outfield.

During yesterday’s 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants, Freeman started at second base.

Schneemann played center field before switching spots with Freeman. Arias started at third base and later moved to shortstop.

Freeman tripled in the sixth inning to score Ralphy Velasquez to tie the game at 1-1.

The Giants regained the lead on a homer by Matt Chapman.

Cleveland surged ahead 4-2 in the eighth on an RBI single by Jhonkensy Noel and a two-run homer by Arias.

PITCHING PERFORMANCES

Ben Lively pitched six strong innings for the Guardians. He gave up four hits and two runs while striking out five.

Lively will be in the starting rotation with Tanner Bibee, Luis Ortiz, and Gavin Williams.

Triston McKenzie and Joey Cantillo pitched one inning each, as they are battling Logan Allen for the fifth spot in the rotation.

McKenzie didn’t give up any runs, but Cantillo surrendered three in the eighth as the Giants rallied to victory.

The Guardians will host the San Diego Padres today at 4:05 Eastern time in Goodyear, Ariz.
