Cleveland Guardians Rally to Beat Seattle Mariners 8-7 in Spring Training

The Cleveland Guardians gave fans an early glimpse of the never-say-die attitude they display during the regular season.

After trailing 5-0 through four innings, the Guardians defeated the Seattle Mariners 8-7 on Friday afternoon in Goodyear, Ariz.

DIGGING THE HOLE

Logan Allen gave up all five runs in the fourth inning, but only two were earned.

Seattle third baseman Jorge Polanco started the scoring with a two-run single.

He scored on an error by Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez, which made the score 3-0 and kept the bases loaded.

Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez finished the outburst with a two-run single.

CALL IT A COMEBACK

Lane Thomas got three of the runs back in fifth inning with his third home run of the spring. Ramirez and Steven Kwan scored.

Cleveland tied the game 5-5 in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Will Brennan. Daniel Schneemann also crossed the plate.

Seattle regained the lead 6-5 off Koby Allard in the eighth inning.

However, Brennan blasted another two-run bomb in the bottom of the inning to give the Guardians a 7-6 advantage.

Seattle didn’t give up, tying the game 7-7 in the ninth off Cleveland right-hander Bradley Hanner.

SEALING THE WIN

Guardians outfielder Micah Pries, who been outstanding this spring, came up in the ninth and hit a grounder to second base.

Seattle’s Joshua Hood committed a throwing error, and Guardians pinch-runner William Hawke raced home with the winning run.

SPRING BREAKOUT

Later in the evening, the teams played a Spring Breakout game with their young prospects. The Guardians won by the same score of 8-7.

Remarkably, Seattle employed a switch-pitcher named Jurrangelo Cijntje.

Cleveland will continue Cactus League play today against the Kansas City Royals. Game time is 4:05 Eastern in Surprise, Ariz.
