Cleveland Guardians Preview: Outfielders and Designated Hitters
The Cleveland Guardiansā outfielders will need to produce as much power as possible to make up for the loss of first baseman Josh Naylor.
Manager Stephen Vogt differed from his predecessor, Terry Francona, who was content to let defensive specialist Myles Straw patrol center field.
The Guardians upgraded that position at the trade deadline by acquiring Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals.
After a slow start, Thomas was red-hot at the end of the season and into the playoffs.
He will join left fielder Steven Kwan to provide stability at two of the three outfield spots.
WHAT ABOUT RIGHT FIELD?
Jhonkensy Noel was a revelation as he came up from the minor leagues in the middle of the season and swatted 13 home runs.
However, pitchers started to figure him out, so he will have to improve on his .218 batting average.
Noel and Will Brennan are likely to continue their platoon in right field.
OTHER OUTFIELD AND DH OPTIONS
Chase DeLauter was the Guardiansā first-round draft pick in 2022. If he looks good in spring training, he could alter the Guardiansā right-field plans.
Angel Martinez, Daniel Schneemann, and Tyler Freeman are both in the mix for the second-base job. They could also serve as backup outfielders.
Kyle Manzardo should see a lot of time at designated hitter, as David Fry will miss the first half of the season with an elbow injury.
Jhonathan Rodriguez could also play his way onto the team, as he hit 29 home runs in Columbus last year.
