Cleveland Guardians Finish Spring Training with 3-2 Win over Arizona Diamondbacks
The Cleveland Guardians closed out the Cactus League schedule by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 yesterday.
A crowd of more than 15,000 fans in Phoenix saw Cleveland beat Arizona for the second day in a row to wrap up the spring with a 13-18 record.
Guardians starter Luis Ortiz gave up two runs in four innings to post a final spring ERA of 10.13.
Five relievers pitched a scoreless inning apiece, including three who have made the team: Paul Sewald, Triston McKenzie, and Joey Cantillo.
TAMING THE SNAKES
Kyle Manzardo socked his fourth home run of the spring in the top of the first inning. He batted .321 in the preseason.
Josh Naylor added an RBI single in the first. Wait a minute … he plays for Arizona now! So the score was tied.
Arizona outfielder Pavin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to put the Diamondbacks on top 2-1 in the tied.
Jhonkensy Noel’s sacrifice fly scored Kahlil Watson to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth.
Noel finished the spring with a .333 batting average, which was encouraging after his slump at the end of last season.
WILL HE MAKE IT?
Will Wilson finished his dark-horse run for the last roster spot with a tie-breaking double in the ninth inning.
Wilson, a 26-year-old infielder, was in the running for a big-league job with Johnathan Rodriguez, Angel Martinez, and Juan Brito.
The Guardians have Wednesday off, and the regular season will begin in Kansas City at 4:10 p.m.
Tanner Bibee will start for Cleveland against All-Star Cole Ragans for the Royals.
