Cleveland Guardians Batter Wandering A’s 12-5 in Cactus League Action

The Cleveland Guardians bashed a dozen extra-base hits in a 12-5 preseason pounding of the A’s on Friday.

Yes, the team is just called “The Athletics.” They are out of Oakland and waiting to move into their new Las Vegas digs.

This year, the A’s will play in Sacramento, Calif.

SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN

Kyle Manzardo started the barrage with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Cleveland also picked up an RBI double by Austin Hedges and a run-scoring triple by Angel Martinez. The Guardians led 4-0 after one inning.

Daniel Schneemann added a two-run homer in the second. Austin Hedges and Tyler Freeman joined the party with solo homers in the third and fourth to put Cleveland on top 8-0.

All of this offense came at the expense of A’s starter Osvaldo Bido, who saw his preseason ERA balloon to 12.91.

The A’s finally scored three runs in the fifth off Slade Cecconi, whose ERA increased to 16.88.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL

Cleveland extended the lead to 9-3 in the seventh inning on an RBI single by catcher Dom Nunez.

First baseman Micah Pries, who is hitting .417 this spring, finished the Cleveland onslaught with a three-run homer in the eighth.

MORE GREAT PITCHING

Joey Cantillo started for Cleveland and pitched three innings. He gave up three hits and two walks but didn’t allow any runs.

Paul Sewald and Hunter Gaddis added a pair of scoreless innings for the Guardians.

The Guardians will visit Peoria, Ariz., today at 3:05 Eastern to take on the San Diego Padres.
