Arizona Diamondbacks Make Right Move by Extending Perdomo
Snakes Alive Baby! America’s team! At least that’s how I feel, because do not sleep on the snakes. All the attention will go to the Dodgers and deservedly so. But the Arizona Diamondbacks made good moves themselves. They added Corbin Burnes and Bo Naylor, and now they have retained one of their own.
According to Jeff Passan, the Diamondbacks and short stop Geraldo Perdomo have agreed on a new contract extension. He signed for four years and $45 million, which also comes with a $5 million signing bonus and the club option in 2030. This is a player who is only 25 years old and the club has him for the rest of this decade. There is tremendous upside with this player, making this a very wise decision on their part.
Signing Perdomo Was the Right Move
Perdomo is only 25 and was named an All-Star during the 2023 season. He truly came into his own that season, slashing
.246/.353/.359/.712 and with a 98 wRC+. It was good to seem him take the next steps in his young career as a hitter. That offense actually got better in 2024, where he saw his batting average jump up to .273 and his OPS get a bump six points. What was good for him was his wRC+ jumped over 100. He’s a good league average bat, and his stuff under the hood is what makes him valuable.
He is not going to give you raw power. Hard contact is not his speciality and neither is the ability to barrel the ball. But he has great approaches at the plate. In 2024, he finished in the 98th percentile for whiff rate and 96th for chase rate, meaning he excels and not chasing pitches or whiffing. Also, he was in the 90th percentile for strikeout rate and is something he had seemingly been good at in his young career.
But he is more than just his growing offense. He has been a solid defender at the short stop position, helping the Diamondbacks have a strong defensive infield. He is the primary short stop, and had just five errors all season long in 2024. Furthermore, he finished with 10 defensive runs saved, which was a career best.
All around, the Diamondbacks are keeping a good player in the fold and at a really good rate, signaling an exciting season ahead.
Exciting Times Ahead for Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks were so close to making the playoffs, but missed on the final day. With the new additions, this team is poised to compete in the gauntlet that’s the NL. But for the roster, this is huge to keep a young player that’s shown he can play and impact the lineup. Now it’s going to be fun to see if he builds off the strong 2024.
