Almost Perfect: Cleveland Guardians Lose Final Game of Opening Homestand
The Kansas City Royals ended the Cleveland Guardians’ five-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Cole Ragans pitched like an All-Star, striking out 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings to earn his first win.
Cleveland starter Ben Lively lasted six innings and gave up all four Kansas City runs. He dropped to 0-2 with a 4.87 ERA.
Jakob Junis pitched a scoreless seventh inning. He hasn’t given up a run in eight appearances.
Joey Cantillo was even more impressive, striking out four batters in the eighth and ninth innings. He didn’t give up a hit or a walk.
THE LONE BRIGHT SPOT
Cleveland had one offensive highlight, and even that play was augmented by a mistake by the Royals.
Daniel Schneeman hit a double to left field, scoring Jhonkensy Noel.
Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. threw wildly to the plate, and Schneemann hustled around to score with a headfirst dive.
Cleveland’s lead lasted until the fourth inning. Salvador Perez tied the game with a two-run homer, the 275th of his career.
The Royals took the lead in the fifth when Maikel Garcia hit a two-run double to right field off Lively.
Kansas City closer Carlos Estevez struck out three Cleveland hitters in the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
