Aaron Judge Leads Yankees to Stop Cleveland Guardians’ Five-Game Winning Streak
The Cleveland Guardians have to be content with winning the series from the New York Yankees.
The Bronx Bombers salvaged the finale of the three-game set with a 5-1 victory on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field.
Luis Ortiz didn’t have a beautiful time, as he was banged around for four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Ortiz (2-3) struck out eight Yankees in that limited time, but he also walked five hitters.
Joey Cantillo pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Zak Kent made his Guardians debut, pitching the final three innings and giving up the Yankees’ final run.
Kent, a 27-year-old right-hander from Virginia, replaced Triston McKenzie on the roster.
“Sticks” was designated for assignment, as he lost his effectiveness after an elbow injury.
Infielder Will Wilson also made his Cleveland debut, playing third base and going 1-for-4. He was promoted after Lane Thomas went on the injured list.
EARLY FIREWORKS
Aaron Judge hit an RBI triple in the first inning and scored on a double by Paul Goldschmidt.
In the bottom of the first, Jose Ramirez singled to center off Carlos Rodon (3-3). Gabriel Arias scored on an error by center fielder Cody Bellinger.
New York scored two more in the second inning off Ortiz. Ben Rice hit an RBI single and scored on a single by Goldschmidt.
Austin Wells doubled off Kent to score Jazz Chisholm in the seventh inning.
The Guardians will take the day off before hosting the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Ben Lively will start for Cleveland against Tanner Houck for the Sox.
(Fun fact: My friend Vince was at the game! My buddies Cole and Joe attended the Guardians’ win in Baltimore on April 15.)
