A Deep Dive On The Newest Ranger Luke Jackson

Despite having secured most of the pieces to their bullpen makeover, the Texas Rangers aren’t done adding pieces yet.

The Rangers announced Monday afternoon that they have agreed to a one-year major league contract with free agent RHP Luke Jackson.

In order to make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, RHP Josh Sborz has been placed on the 60-day IL as he continues to recover from right shoulder surgery.

Jackson returns to Texas where he was drafted in 2010 and would eventually make his Major League debut in 2015.

Across both 2015 and 2016, Jackson would make 15 appearances with the Rangers posting an 8.50 ERA in 18 innings.

Following his time in Texas, Jackson joined the Atlanta Braves where he would eventually help the team win the 2021 World Series.

In 2019, Jackson led the Braves with 18 saves in a year, and he put up a 3.84 ERA in 70 appearances.

2022 saw Jackson miss the entire season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery before returning the next season with the Giants where he spent 2023 and part of 2023.

While splitting time with the Giants and Braves this season, Jackson posted a 5.09 ERA in 53 innings.

Jackson features a four-pitch mix with his slider being his most used pitch at 51.9% followed by his fastball which comes in at 31.7%. His curveball is featured as one of his two-strike pitches at 15.5% and his cutter is thrown less than 1% of the time.

His fastball won’t blow you away coming in at just 94.7 MPH on average but Jackson’s slider averages a strong 87.3.

Upon entering Rangers camp, Jackson will look to compete for one of the few open spots in the Rangers pen.

Jackson will likely be in the group of non-roster invitees such as Jesse Chavez, J.T. Chargois, Joe Barlow, and others as players competing for one of the final bullpen spots.

Despite having a late start, camp will be essential to Jackson who has just over a month to impress Chris Young and Bruce Bochy and be on the roster when the Rangers take on the Red Sox on March 27th
