Cleveland Guardians Split Doubleheader with Boston Red Sox

After getting swept in all four doubleheaders last year, the Cleveland Guardians should be happy with their split yesterday with the Boston Red Sox.

Friday night’s rainout led to the twinbill, which left the Guardians with a 14-11 record. They trail the Detroit Tigers by 1.5 games in the American League Central Division

GUARDIANS WIN 5-4

Ben Lively survived an early Boston barrage, and the reshuffled Cleveland bullpen came through as the Guardians won the opener 5-4

Wilyer Abreu hit a three-run homer off Lively in the top of the first, but Cleveland responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Jose Ramirez singled off Tanner Houck to score Steven Kwan. Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly scored Nolan Jones.

Gabriel Arias knocked in the tying run with a single to score Ramirez. Daniel Schneemann put Cleveland on top by driving in Arias with a single.

Despite that offensive explosion, Boston tied the game 4-4. Rafael Devers homered to right field off Lively.

Kwan, who is batting .343, drove in the decisive run in the sixth inning. He beat Boston’s “infield in” strategy with a bloop single to score Will Wilson.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt protected the lead by using Hunter Gaddis in the seventh and Emmanuel Clase in the eighth.

His strategy worked, as they each struck out a pair of hitters. Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

Tim Herrin (3-0) picked up the win for keeping Boston off the board in the sixth inning.

RED SOX WIN 7-4

Cleveland called up Doug Nikhazy to pitch Game 2 of the doubleheader, and his big-league debut didn’t go well.

The Red Sox built a 6-0 lead off the 25-year-old lefty from North Carolina in the first three innings. Boston cruised to a 7-4 victory.

Jarren Duran was the big star for Boston. He drove in a pair of runs with a single in the second and a triple in the third.

Then he stole home! Curiously, Duran was wearing no gloves on his left hand and several gloves flapping around on his right hand.

Cleveland cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning. Angel Martinez hit an RBI single and scored on a two-run homer to left field by Jhonkensy Noel.

Veteran lefty Koby Allard pitched six innings of relief for Cleveland. He earned a promotion from Columbus, with Zak Kent heading back down Interstate 71.

Allard only gave up one run on an infield single by Alex Bregman in the sixth.

Cleveland and Boston will settle the series today at 1:40 p.m. Logan Allen (1-1, 2.11 ERA) will start for Cleveland against Boston’s Brayan Bello (1-0, 1.80 ERA).
