Why Did The Texans Trade Back From The First Round?
Last night, during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, there was an interestingly low number of trades.
However, that didn’t stop the Houston Texans from taking one of the night’s more interesting storylines.
While on the clock with the 25th pick in the first round, the Texans struck a deal with the New York Giants.
The G men wanted to trade up to select Ole Miss QB Jaxon Dart, and Houston took an opportunity to gain more draft capital in later rounds.
Houston sent the 25th pick to the Giants in exchange for the 34th pick (second round) and the 99th pick (third round) this year and a 2026 third-round pick.
“We went into today, I would say honestly, we had three different scenarios: trade up, stay at 25 and pick, trade back,” Texans GM Nick Caserio said.
“I mean, (Head Coach) DeMeco (Ryans) and I have been talking about basically for two, three days about some different scenarios, possibilities. I don’t want to say we talked to the whole league, but probably talked to the whole league on every different level.
“There are some players we identified; some were out of reach. Some — in the end, trades are a byproduct of teams willing to make decision to move or not.
“We felt at 25, that was the best thing for us. Puts us in a pretty good spot, two twos (second round), three threes (third round), picked up another three (third round) next year. We’ll deal with tomorrow. We think we’re going to get some pretty good football players tomorrow. We felt like the value to draft was basically in the middle, so try to take advantage of our opportunities here tomorrow.”
All that said, there was speculation that one of the main factors into the decision was the Green Bay Packers selecting University of Texas WR Matthew Golden at pick 23, two picks before the Texans were on the clock.
Ohio State lineman Donovan Jackson, going at 24, could have been another factor as Houston looks to continue to upgrade their line.
If the Texans had kept their pick, many of the best available players were at defensive positions that Houston has locked down.
Nonetheless, the Texans will be one of, if not the busiest, team on the second day of the NFL Draft, primarily looking to upgrade at WR and on the offensive line.
