Is Desmond Watson The Answer The Bears Are Looking For?
Today is the start of the 2025 NFL Draft, and as a die-hard fan of the sport……I can tell you that I am STOKED for this thing to start. The spring and summer months can become rather boring and monotonous without football on our TVs, so whenever an event pops up that reminds us of what’s ahead……it just brings the biggest of smiles to my face.
It’s one of the best feelings in the world. But now, as a Bears fan, the question that arises is…..what will Ryan Poles be doing at the draft this weekend? What is his plan? Who’s on his board? Well, I have a pretty solid idea for a late round snag.
Introducing……Desmond Watson from the University of Florida.

Watson, for those of you who are unaware, is a gigantic human being who plays on the interior part of the defensive line. He stands at 6’5,” and weighs in at an astounding 464 lbs. The man is an absolute UNIT; basically the phrase “immovable object” personified. In his four seasons with the Florida Gators, the big d-lineman posted a stat-line consisting of;
51 G, 963 Snaps, 63 Tackles, 4 TFL, 1.5 Sacks
The big man from Plant City, FL was an unstoppable force for Billy Napier’s bunch, even if the stat sheet doesn’t show it as much. He wasn’t that much of a threat in the passing game, posting a 6.3% win rate last season for the Gators. But he was ELITE at stopping the run with his size and athleticism off the ball, holding his own against some of the best linemen in the country.

He is a top-notch gap plugger, and someone who can help elevate a Bears’ run-D that ranked in the bottom five in total rush yards allowed (2317) last season. He would also provide great depth to a part of the Bears defense that needs it, with ‘Big Bill’ Andrew Billings and Gervon Dexter Sr. being the main guys manning the middle.
The only question that I, and many other people are asking, is…..can he get his weight under control? With a frame like that, Watson can seriously become a problem in the passing game, and when a play starts to break down and he needs to scramble. Sure, his size and strength are cool and all. But the speed and stamina may kill him, and limit his usage in Dennis Allen’s defense.
But thankfully, it looks like Watson is taking the necessary steps to better his health, and his chances of having a long and successful career in the NFL. According to an article written on Pro Football Talk;
“Watson said he is eating omelets with spinach and tomatoes for breakfast instead of grits and pancakes and is snacking on peanuts and almonds instead of junk food. That has meant skipping a trip into the convenience store after gassing up his car.”
Simply put; if Watson is available on Day 3, then I think Ryan Poles should give him a shot. Bring Watson in, fortify your defense, and let him be your wall. He has all the makings of being a solid player in this league, and you need the depth. So why not? What’s the worst that can happen?
But in the end, as always, what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
