Gavin Williams, Jose Ramirez Lead Cleveland Guardians Past New York Yankees
Gavin Williams silenced the mighty New York Yankees’ bats long enough to give the Cleveland Guardians a 6-4 win last night.
Williams (2-1) pitched into the seventh inning for the second straight time. In 2025, that’s a big deal.
The Yankees cut into Cleveland’s 6-0 lead, but Joey Cantillo and Cade Smith shut down the Bronx Bombers to seal the Guardians’ fourth straight win.
JOSE HEATS UP
Jose Ramirez hit a three-run homer into the right-field seats to give Cleveland the lead off Clarke Schmidt in the third inning.
Kyle Manzardo went back-to-back, increasing Cleveland’s lead to 4-0. Ramirez has five homers, and Manzardo leads the team with seven.
Brayan Rocchio’s broken-bat single scored Angel Martinez in the fifth. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm tried to field the ball, but he was too busy dodging the bat.
Ramirez picked up his fourth RBI of the game in the sixth. He singled to score Steven Kwan.
IT CAN’T BE EASY
New York finally scored off Williams in the seventh, as Jasson Dominguez bashed a 445-foot, two-run homer to right center field.
Paul Sewald finished the seventh for Cleveland, but he gave up a two-run shot to Chisholm in the eighth inning.
Since Emmanuel Clase had appeared in all three games in Pittsburgh, Cade Smith pitched the ninth to collect his first save. Smith struck out Aaron Judge to end the game.
Game 2 is set for 6:10 p.m. tonight at Progressive Field. Tanner Bibee will start for Cleveland against the Yankees’ Will Warren.
