Is The ‘Nick Castellanos Home Run Trend’ Officially Dead?

Osama Bin Laden’s death, the Thom Brennaman incident, and Joe Biden withdrawing from the presidential race. You might be asking yourself; “what do these three random moments have in common?” “What is the ONE common denominator in history that strings these three situations together?”

Well, and I’m not kidding when I say this……it’s Nick Castellanos hitting a home run. It’s the fact that the current Philadelphia Phillies OF actually “went yard” on THE DAY, or the day after all of these moments happened. The best part about it though, is the fact that these aren’t the only important historical/somber moments that have spawned a “Casty dinger.” OH NO! There was also;

The time he SMASHED a grand slam…..just HOURS after Alex Ovechkin broke the NHL’s all-time goals record.

And even the time when he sent one over the fence, when the commentators were talking about the Blue Jays’ pitching coach and his DUI.

He has been almost AUTOMATIC when it comes to disrupting major moments during a baseball broadcast. It doesn’t matter the situation or the time of the day; if something sad/monumental was happening in the world, then Castellanos was BOUND TO find the outfield seats. It has become such an iconic and memorable trend, and after the tragic passing of Pope Francis this past Monday…..we all thought that he was going to do it again.

We thought it was a foregone conclusion that #8 would send a ball into the brisk New York night. People were TUNED IN to every at-bat that the Hialeah, FL product had against Tylor Megill and the rest of the New York Mets pitching staff. It was such a popular prediction, and a thought that was on the mind of every single baseball fan across the country……to the point where they allegedly caused FanDuel Sportsbook to lock the prop on their app.

(Coincidence? Maybe? I can’t say for sure. All I will say though is…..it’s “fishy timing.”)

But in the end……Castellanos couldn’t get the job done on Monday night. He couldn’t continue the streak that has been attached to his name for so many years. In a highly-touted divisional bout against their rival Mets…….he ended up finishing 0-4, with two strikeouts.

Now, does this mean that the streak is over? Does this mean that we should stop betting on this man, whenever something major happens in the news? Absolutely NOT! This is a trend that will live until the end of time…..or until Casty is officially out of the league. I, like many other gamblers, will SURELY be putting money on him sometime in the future.

It’s just our civic duty as sports fans, and gamblers as a whole. But in the end, as always…..what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
