Blue Jays Lose Series To Mariners Following 8-3 Loss
Sunday’s clash between the Blue Jays and Mariners would mark the end of their three game series, and would also be the final game of the Blue Jay’s homestand before hitting the road again, and Toronto was certainly hoping to leave home on a good note with a win. Easton Lucas had a rough outing in his last start on the mound, and he would aim to get back to his early dominance.
The game got under way and Lucas came out of the gates in big trouble, as he would give up a homer to the very first batter he faced in Dylan Moore, and before everyone could file into their seats the Mariners were up 1-0. then just two batters later, Cal Raleigh would launch a two-run homer into right field, and three batters into the ballgame, it was 3-0 Mariners with still not a single out in the inning.
Lucas would end up getting out of the inning with no more damage being done, but the onslaught would continue in the second inning, as the Mariners would load the bases and Randy Arozarena would poke a single into left field that would put two more runs across and extend the Mariner’s lead to 5-0. The second frame would end after Mitch Garver lined a base hit up the middle and drove in yet another run for Seattle, capping off two straight 3-run innings to open the game, and Seattle seemed to have already had the game won at this point.
Lucas was chased from the game before he could even finish the second inning, and to get the final out and continue the game in Lucas’ place would be surprise callup, Paxton Schultz who was brought up to the big league club just the day before, and was officially sent in for his debut.
Toronto managed to chip into the deficit a bit in the bottom of the second, with Tyler Heineman scoring one with an RBI single, and Bo Bichette cashing in another by the same means. Paxton Schultz was phenomenal in his MLB debut, shutting out Seattle in all 4.1 innings he pitched and racking up eight strikeouts in the process.
However, Toronto was once again not able to come through with the bats against this Mariner’s pitching staff, as Luis Castillo was also dominant in his outing, but the Jays managed to score another run in the third, after Nathan Lukes sent a sac fly into cneter field that would be deep enough to score a runner from third.
The middle portion of the game was slow with no scoring happening for either team, but the Mariners would tally two more in the seventh to make the score an abysmal 8-3 game. Seattle’s pitching would continue to blank the Blue Jays and finish off the game to take the win and the series, winning two out of three.
Toronto had alot of trouble in this series at the plate, just being unable to get any real offence going unlike their series in Boston prior to coming back home. Toronto will head out again for the road starting their trip in Houston for a series against the Astros starting on Monday.
