Senzatela shines as Moniak’s triple lifts Rockies to victory in Game 2 of doubleheader

After dropping the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader 3-2, the Colorado Rockies bounced back to defeat the Washington Nationals 3–1, snapping an eight-game losing streak and improving their record to 4–17.

Debuting their new City Connect uniforms, Antonio Senzatela delivered a much-needed solid performance for the Rockies, pitching six innings and allowing just one run on six hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. It was a welcome sight for the Rockies after a slate of poor starts from the team over the last week and a tax on the bullpen. The Rockies desperately needed some length out of their starter to relieve some of the load that’s been placed on the bullpen as of late, especially after Game 1’s starter, Kyle Freeland, went just two innings due to a blister on his finger. Senzatela delivered, navigating some traffic and throwing just 83 pitches and inducing 11 groundouts.

The Nationals scored their lone run in the first inning when Nathaniel Lowe singled to left field, bringing home James Wood. The bullpen locked things down with three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out six. Zach Agnos threw a scoreless eighth inning in his major league debut to earn his first career hold, while Tyler Kinley struck out the side in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Despite a strong start, Nationals pitcher Brad Lord took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings with five strikeouts. Those two runs came in the fourth inning when Jacob Stallings reached via a hit by pitch and Aaron Schunk hit a double to right field before both scored on a two-run triple by Mickey Moniak to give them a 2-1 lead. Nick Martini added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a groundout that scored Jordan Beck to give them the final of 3-1.

The Rockies still struck out 10 times and had just four walks, leaving 10 men on base and going 1-for-10 with Runners in Scoring Position, but it was a gritty game where they played spectacular defense and got the clutch hits they needed while the pitching did it’s job. It was one of the more complete games of the season for the club during their rough stretch.

With an off day on Monday, the Rockies head to Kansas City to take on the Royals for a three game set with Ryan Feltner scheduled for Game 1 on Tuesday.
