Veen and Fulford hit first career homers but Rox drop Game 1 of Sunday doubleheader
The Colorado Rockies’ struggles continued in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Washington Nationals, falling 3–2 at Coors Field. This loss marks their eighth consecutive defeat, dropping their season record to 3–17, the worst in Major League Baseball.
The Nationals capitalized on defensive miscues in the second inning, scoring all three of their runs. A throwing error by Rockies catcher Braxton Fulford allowed Dylan Crews to score, and another misplay on a fielder’s choice by Fulford enabled Jacob Young and Trey Lipscomb to cross the plate. These unearned runs proved decisive in the game’s outcome .
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland exited after two innings due to a finger issue on his pitching hand, a recurring problem in his career. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out two and walking one. Angel Chivilli took over in relief, delivering a solid performance to keep the game within reach as the bullpen combined to allow just three hits while striking out three and issuing three walks.
Offensively, the Rockies managed only four hits. Zac Veen and Braxton Fulford provided the highlights with solo home runs in the third and sixth innings, respectively, the first career home run for either hitter. It was the second time in franchise history that two players hit their first home run in the same game.. Despite these efforts, the team couldn’t overcome the early deficit as they stranded the tying run in the bottom of the ninth at third base for the second game in a row. On the day the Rockies struck out 11 times and had just one walk, going 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position.
Nationals pitcher Jake Irvin earned the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts. Kyle Finnegan secured his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Rockies will look to snap their losing streak in Game 2 of the doubleheader, with Antonio Senzatela slated to start against Nationals’ right-hander Brad Lord.
