Guerrero’s First Homer Propels Jays To Series Win With 3-1 Victory

After evening the series at a game apiece on Tuesday, the Blue Jays looked to take the series win in the final game against the Braves on Wednesday. Chris Bassitt was in charge of the mound for Toronto, and he’d be aiming to get his team the win with another great outing.

The offence would be stagnant on both sides to begin, as Bassitt and Atlanta’s Spencer Strider were making quick work of the early batters they faced. But the Blue Jays would strike first in the bottom of the third, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would rip an RBI single up the middle to cash in Bo BIchette from second to make it a 1-0 ballgame.

Bassitt would continue to carve up the Brave’s lineup, getting out of tough jams and throwing a truly incredible scoreless bid. In the Bottom of the sixth inning, it would be Guerrero Jr. once again to double the Blue Jay’s lead to 2-0 after blasting his first homerun of the season.

Coming into this game, it had been Vladdy’s 18th game to begin the season without a single homerun, and right off signing his brand new extension the franchise superstar was finally due for a big fly.

Bo BIchette would add onto the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, and as the Braves were being blanked on the scoresheet by the Jay’s pitching staff, Toronto was living free and easy at the plate.

Toronto wouldn’t score another run, but the Braves were only able to plate across one run in the top of the ninth and Jeff Hoffman would be able to finish the job and close out the game with a 3-1 win. The biggest thing to note other than Guerrero’s two-RBI night, was that the pitching staff in this game set a single game franchise record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game with 19 total punchouts. Bassitt carried most of the load, racking up 10 strikeouts through only five innings of work. It was an incredible all around performance from the pitching, and the hitters came through when they were needed. Toronto will take an off day on Thursday before getting ready to host the Seattle Mariners for three games at home for the weekend.
