Comeback Effort In Extra Innings Puts Blue Jays Over Orioles 7-6

The Toronto Blue Jays wrap up their series in Baltimore to finish their road trip before returning home, and after losing the first game of the series, the Jays were looking to once again split against the O’s. In the final game of the matchup, Toronto would go to their ace Jose Berrios to take the mound against Baltimore’s Cade Povich.

The Orioles got on the board first with runners on the corners with two outs, and after a wild pitch from Berrios got away from Alejandro Kirk, a run came across to score and the O’s jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Toronto would answer right away in the top half of the second, with Alejandro Kirk blasting his first home run of the season to even the game back up at 1-1.

Baltimore wouldn’t go away however, as their power bats would come through again and Ryan Mountcastle would send a solo homer over the wall to give the Orioles their lead right back. It would be back and forth offence in the early innings, as in the top of the third the Blue Jays would tie it once again thanks to a Vladdy Guerrero RBI single, and the O’s would respond in the bottom half again after a Gunnar Henderson triple followed by a fielders choice that allowed him to score safely and regain the Oriole’s one run lead.

The Jays wouldn’t be able to plate a run in the top of the fourth, but the Orioles would add on after Tyler O’neill would send a lead-off homerun into left field and Baltimore would take a 4-2 advantage. Berrios found himself in trouble early, as the Orioles would score in each of the first four innings, and the Blue Jay’s bats didn’t seem like they were going to be able to keep up with Baltimore’s firepower.

Jumping ahead to the sixth inning, Toronto would cut into the lead by scoring a run from a Myles Straw RBI single. But the Orioles would just be too overpowering with their offence yet again, scoring two runs in the bottom half, negating Toronto’s run in the top half and adding an insurance run in the process.

The eighth inning came around, and this would most likely be Toronto’s last chance to make a real comeback attempt. Alejandro Kirk would start off the scoring by driving in a run with an RBI double, and Davis Schneider would follow up later in the inning with a groundout and an RBI to put the Jays back to within one with two outs. This would leave it up to Bo Bichette to drive home the tying run, and he would do just that with an RBI single, and the Blue Jays would score three runs in the innings to even the score at 6-6 heading to the ninth. The Jays were unable to score in the top half, and Jeff Hoffman would come into the game to try and send the game to extra innings for Toronto. with a runner on second and two outs, a short little pop-up in shallow right-center field looked dangerous and could’ve spelled the end except for a terrific sliding catch by Nathan Lukes to save the game and send it to the 10th inning.

The extra frame would get under way, and with runners on the corners it would be Myles Straw who sent a chopper up the third base line that would allow Andres Gimenez to score on the infield hit and the Blue Jays would take the lead.

Hoffman stayed in the game for Toronto and would close the door shut after a stellar performance by him, and Toronto would complete the comeback with the 7-6 win. Toronto never gave up in this game, and fought through all adversity until the very end and were rewarded as such. The team now fly’s home to Toronto to play host in their first series back against the Atlanta Braves starting on Monday.
