Steven Kwan, Gavin Williams Lead Cleveland Guardians to Series Sweep

The Chicago White Sox were the perfect guests for the Cleveland Guardians’ homecoming party.

After starting the season with a 3-6 road trip, the Guardians swept the Sox in three games.

After a 2-2 start, the White Sox have lost eight in a row.

A hardy crowd of 12,663 braved the cold, damp weather as Cleveland cruised to a 6-1 victory on Thursday afternoon.

GAVIN GETS THE WIN

Gavin Williams (1-0) pitched five solid innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out seven.

He only gave up one run on a wild pitch that scored Nick Maton in the first inning.

Kyle Manzardo erased the White Sox lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

Manzardo has four homers and 11 RBI in the first dozen games.

THE STEVEN KWAN SHOW

Kwan scored on that homer, and he also provided the rest of the Cleveland offense.

He socked a two-run homer to right field in the third inning, boosting Cleveland to a 4-1 lead.

Kwan added a bases-loaded single in the fourth, and he bunted to score Bo Naylor in the sixth.

Overall, Kwan collected four hits and four RBI to increase his batting average to .356.

PROTECT THE PEN

Jakob Junis and Joey Cantillo each delivered two innings of shutout relief, preserving the rest of the bullpen for the Kansas City series.

The Guardians will host the Royals today at 6:10 p.m. Tanner Bibee will start for Cleveland against Kris Bubic for Kansas City.
