Toronto Chokes Lead In The 8th, Lose Second Straight To Mets 3-2

A heartbreaking loss for Jays fans, as Toronto loses their second straight game for the first time this season, dropping game two of their three game series against the Mets 3-2.

The game was very slow and methodical throughout, with both starting pitchers dishing out their best stuff. Chris Bassitt went almost seven straight shutout innings, and Griffin Canning went four innings only giving up a run. Going into the seventh inning, Toronto had blanked New York on the scoresheet, holding a 2-0 lead, after Vladimir GUerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette drove in the Blue Jay’s two runs in the ballgame. Bassit had completely shut down the Met’s lineup, punching out nine batters and putting the Jays in prime position to win.

However, things would not end the way it looked like it was going because in the eighth inning, after the first two men reached base, Jesse Winker sent a high fly ball into right field that would drop, scoring both runners and Winker would end up at third with a two-out triple. In the blink of an eye, a hard fought, rugged game of shutout ball was erased and New York was looking to now take the lead.

Toronto was unable to answer in the top of the ninth, sending the game into the bottom half with a chance for New York to walk it off.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jose Siri would draw a walk and put the winning run on base, Luis Torrens would single into left field and Siri would go from first to third, putting the game winning run just 90 feet away from home plate. The lineup would turn over and Francisco Lindor would step up and line a sacrifice fly into center field, allowing Siri to score and giving the Mets their second straight win at home.

The one thing that did the Jays in was their inability to put runs across when they had men in scoring position. From the very first inning, the Jays had chances with runners on to score, but couldn’t get the job done.

The Blue Jays will hope to finish off their series in Queens with a win, with Bowden Francis going to the mound looking to get the Jays back on track.
