Cubs win second straight against Padres 7-1
Matthew Boyd tossed the third straight for the Chicago Cubs on Saturday in their 7-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Boyd went six innings without allowing a run and striking out five en route to the win. It was the fifth straight win for the Cubs.
The Cubs got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when Carson Kelly singled off of Nick Pivetta to score Dansby Swanson. Ian Happ, playing in his 1,000 career game, followed with a walk to load the bases. Pivetta then walked Kyle Tucker to force in Pete Crow-Armstrong and give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Dansby Swanson expanded the Cubs’ lead in the third when he blasted a home run against the wind to center field.
The Cubs added on again in the fourth when Nico Hoerner’s two-out single into right field scored Michael Busch, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Carson Kelly continued his hot start to the 2025 season when he hit a two-out three-run home run to left field to give the Cubs a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
The Padres got their first run of the day in the top of the seventh when Fernando Tatis, Jr. singled to center off of Nate Pearson. The damage would have been worse there had it not been for Happ making the catch of the young season earlier in the inning.
The Padres and Cubs will wrap up their three-game set tomorrow at 1:20. Kyle Hart will take the mound for San Diego, taking on Ben Brown for Chicago.
