Perfect Padres: San Diego Beats Cleveland Guardians to Improve to 6-0
The Cleveland Guardians haven’t enjoyed their trip to San Diego so far.
The red-hot Padres won 7-0 last night at Petco Park, improving their record to 6-0.
That is the best start in the team’s 56-year history.
Hilariously, the Padres aren’t even in first place. The defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers are 7-0.
The Dodgers had a head start with a pair of games in Japan, and they are off to the best start for a defending champion since Babe Ruth and the 1933 New York Yankees.
KING FOR A DAY
Logan Allen, the Guardians’ No. 5 starter, faced Padres ace Michael King, who pitched five dominant innings.
King racked up 11 strikeouts. He only gave up singles to Steven Kwan and Gabriel Arias and a walk to Kwan.
He bowed out after 88 pitches, but the Guardians couldn’t even get a hit against the four Padres relievers that followed King.
Poor Nolan Jones wore the Golden Sombrero, striking out four times.
PADRE POWER
Jackson Merrill put San Diego on the board in the fourth with a solo home run.
The Padres scored twice in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Fernando Tatis Jr. and a single by Luis Arraez.
Jake Cronenworth’s RBI single increased the Padres’ lead to 4-0.
San Diego scored its final three runs without even collecting a hit (two ground balls and a throwing error by Cleveland catcher Bo Naylor).
The Guardians will try to salvage the final game of the series today at 4:10 p.m. Eastern. Ben Lively will start for Cleveland against Dylan Cease for San Diego.
