Several Rangers To Test Out Viral Torpedo Bats
Storylines from across Major League Baseball’s opening weekend were taken over by a new wave of bats.
“Torpedo Bats,” which were famously used by multiple New York Yankees in their 36-run three-game sweep of Milwaukee Brewers, have been the talk of baseball.
Many teams and players across the league are exploring the idea of using the new bats, which were designed by a physicist from MIT.
When you look at the design of a classic baseball bat, the physics just don’t add up,” said Dr. David Pritchard, a physicist at MIT. “When the ball comes in and hits the sweet spot, it bends the bat and so some of the energy goes into bending the bat, and that’s what makes the noise.”
A Torpedo Bat allows the maximum diameter of the bat to shift closer to the sweet spot where a batter more often makes contact.
Upon hearing the science of it, several members of the Texas Rangers are reportedly trying to hop on the wave.
Joc Pederson says that he will experiment with the new torpedo bats in games immediately. Jake Burger and Josh Smith are also both interested in using the bats.
Burger has reportedly expressed interest in trying them during practice for two weeks before deciding if he wants to use them in the game.
Smith reportedly wants all the information that he can get regarding the bats and if they ultimately will be able to help them.
As time goes on, one of the most interesting storylines will be to see which Rangers and other players across MLB will start using them.
Reds shortstop, Elly De La Cruz, used a torpedo bat and hit a pair of home runs against Texas on Monday night.
Other players known to be using them include Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, and many more.
