Cleveland Guardians Lose to San Diego as Luis Ortiz Continues to Struggle

Luis Ortiz posted a 10.13 ERA during spring training, but those games didn’t count.

Well, he started the regular season with a 13.50 ERA as the Cleveland Guardians lost to the San Diego Padres 7-2 on Monday night.

Ortiz came to Cleveland in the offseason from the Pittsburgh Pirates after the Guardians sent second baseman Andres Gimenez to Toronto.

Ortiz was impressive last year with Pittsburgh (7-6, 3.32 ERA), so we’ll see if he can right the ship.

RAMIREZ BOUNCES BACK

Jose Ramirez returned from a wrist injury to hit a solo homer in the first inning for the Guardians.

San Diego then jumped on Ortiz for four runs in the second inning.

Gavin Sheets hit a two-run double, followed by a sacrifice fly by Jason Heyward and an RBI single by Fernando Tatis Jr.

Guardians catcher Austin Hedges, who showed some power during spring training, socked a solo homer to cut the Padres’ lead to 4-2 in the third inning.

However, San Diego chased Ortiz with three more runs in the fifth. Sheets doubled in two runs and scored on a double by Heyward.

Jakob Junis and Triston McKenzie kept the Padres from doing any more damage in the last 3 1/3 innings.

Kyle Hart picked up the victory in his San Diego debut after dominating the Korean Baseball Organization last year.

The Padres are off to a 5-0 start for the first time. They have been around since 1969.

The series will continue tonight at 9:40 Eastern. Logan Allen will make his season debut for the Guardians against the Padres’ Michael King.
