Wilyer Abreu With a Statement Home Opener Game
A win is a win and this 2025 season is off to a rocking start for the Boston Red Sox. In what will be a four game series, the Red Sox will take a 1-0 lead into the second game. They can thank Wilyer Abreu, who had a statement game for the Red Sox in the opener and was a large reason why they won.
Abreu Had a Statement Game
When you truly dissect this entire article, the big thing that pops out is that Abreu was a player that was rumored in trade talks. Many fans were willing to part ways with the player all due to the fact that Roman Anthony exists and there is a logjam at the position. Well, the tables certainly turned, as Abreu is on the opening day roster and certainly made a statement in this opening day game.
The Red Sox offense was struggling. Former friend in Nathan Eovaldi was dialed in and was fooling the batters with his curveball and mixing it in well with his fastball. The top of the order was having trouble mustering up any offense and then comes the bottom of the order.
Wilyer Abreu hit the game tying home run to right field and finally gave the Red Sox offense some life and the team some energy. While the team saw their ace exit the game after five innings, the game would fall on the backs of the bullpen and then again Wilyer Abreu.
Trevor Story got on base with a single and then stole a base to get into scoring position. Kristian Campbell got his first career hit and then skipper Alex Cora put in the speedster David Hamilton to give a threat on the base paths. Abreu, who struggled mightily against left handed pitching, but then crushed a three run home run off the righty to give the Red Sox a cushion. Credit to Cora, who never pulled Abreu out of the game when facing lefties and it panned out in the long run. Justin Slaten and Aroldis Chapman held down the fort, but Abreu really is to thank for this game.
Abreu finished the game 3-3, with two home runs and 4 RBI’s. He had two exit velocities that topped 110 MPH and one that was 108 MPH. That’ll play kid, that’ll play. Dad strength really kicked in and Abreu helped lead this team to victory.
In a spring that was littered with talks of the big three prospects, it’s nice to see Abreu be the guy that delivered and put on a show for Red Sox nation.
