WrestleMania V Flashback: The Megapowers Explode (1989)
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage’s team was destined to self-destruct in spectacular fashion, leading to the main event of WrestleMania V.
Savage grew increasingly suspicious of Hogan’s intentions toward their manager, Miss Elizabeth.
When Liz was injured during the Megapowers’ battle with The Twin Towers, Hogan carried the damsel in distress to safety.
Savage, the WWF champion, was pummeled by Big Bossman and Akeem. When Hogan finally returned, Savage slapped him and walked out of the match.
Back in the locker room, Hogan demanded an explanation. Savage said that Hulk had “lust in his eyes” for Elizabeth and brutally attacked him.
The main event of WrestleMania V had Elizabeth in a neutral corner. Savage hit his classic elbow drop, but Hogan kicked out and recaptured the WWF championship.
ULTIMATE UPSET
“Ravishing” Rick Rude defeated The Ultimate Warrior for the Intercontinental championship. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan interfered to pick up his first title as a WWF manager.
Heenan also led The Brain Busters (Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson) to victory over Strike Force after Rick Martel walked out on partner Tito Santana.
Things didn’t go so well for Heenan when he stepped into the ring, as he lost quickly to former his protégé, Terry “The Red Rooster” Taylor.
FEAR THE SNAKE
Jake “The Snake” Roberts defeated Andre the Giant when special referee Big John Studd disqualified Andre. This was supposed to lead to a new Andre-Studd feud, but it fizzled out.
Demolition retained the WWF tag team title by defeating The Powers of Pain & Mr. Fuji in a handicap match.
