Mackinnon Scores 1,000th Career Point, Avs Shutout Chicago 3-0

Another game and another stellar performance from Nathan Mackinnon. However, this matchup at home against Chicago would turn into a more eventful game than most would think. Heading into the contest, Mackinnon would be sitting on 999 career points and looked to become the 100th player in NHL history to log 1,000 points in a career.

Fans at Ball Arena would erupt early, as Mackinnon would bring the puck into the offensive zone, and would fire a pass to the back post of the Blackhawks net where Martin Necas would be waiting to tap in the rebound putting Colorado up 1-0 and securing Mackinnon’s 1,000th career NHL point. Unfortunately for everyone except the Hawks, just as the equipment staff were ready to tape up the monumental puck a video review challenge revealed that Martin Necas was offside as Mackinnon brought the puck into the zone before the goal was scored. The call on the ice was reversed, the score was brought back to 0-0, and fans in the arena would once again have to wait in anticipation for the illustrious 1,000th point to be scored.

While the game remained scoreless throughout a large majority of the contest, there were multiple high danger chances at both ends that made for a wild thriller of a game on a Monday night. Finally, the scoring would open in the third period, when Artturi Lehkonen redirected a shot from the blue line that made its way past Chicago’s Spencer Knight and gave the Avs the first goal of the game. The silver lining of this goal though, was that Mackinnon received a secondary assist on the goal and finally registered that long awaited point needed to crack 1,000 for his career. All Mackinnon’s teammates rushed to him after the goal when they realized what had been accomplished, and that puck was sent to the equipment staff to be properly taped and gifted to the franchise forward to place in his award cabinet along with all his other milestone awards.

Getting back on track to the game itself, Joel Kiviranta and Martin Necas added to Colorado’s tallies, and the Avalanche would cap off a perfect home stand with a shutout win.

Colorado wrapped up their home stand on a perfect note, grabbing two much needed points, and head off on the road to face Minnesota the very next night on Tuesday, looking to keep their hot streak going.
