Bills Secure Josh Allen with Record-Breaking Deal
After releasing pass rusher Von Miller which freed up 8.4 million against the cap earlier on Sunday, March 10th, they responded quickly in figuring out how to spend that money, as the team inked franchise quarterback Josh Allen to a record-breaking contract extension.
Allen, the face of the franchise, agreed to a historic six-year, $330 million extension, The deal includes $215 million guaranteed, which is the largest guarantee ever given to an NFL player and it locks the 27-year-old quarterback through the 2031 season.
Josh Allen has led The Bills to six straight AFC East titles and is coming off an NFL MVP season where he was the heart and soul of the Bills’ offence and has been since being drafted seventh overall in 2018. While securing Allen’s long-term future is a massive win, it required some sacrifices, most notably the release of Von Miller. The 34-year-old edge rusher, who was once a key part of Buffalo’s defensive identity, was let go in a cap-saving move. Miller, who signed a massive six-year, $120 million contract in 2022, struggled with injuries and was unable to replicate his past dominance. Cutting him freed up much-needed cap space, which helped facilitate Allen’s extension.
Beyond Miller, the Bills also made other financial moves, including restructuring contracts and cutting additional players to stay under the cap. This offseason has been all about ensuring the team’s long-term competitiveness while making the difficult decisions necessary to keep the core intact.
Despite Miller’s departure, Buffalo’s defense remains strong, with younger players like Gregory Rousseau and Ed Oliver poised to step up. Meanwhile, locking down for even longer and crediting that his MVP performance was important to The Bills, it is showing the franchises support in him plus making sure that the Bills will continue to be contenders for years to come.
