Why Casual Fans Should Hop on the Red Sox Hype Train

Ever since winning the World Series in 2018, it’s been quite the whirlwind of a roller coaster ride. The Red Sox traded super star Mookie Betts and the team has finished in last place three of the last four seasons. It has been frustrating watching a big market team operate like a small market team and even see the casual baseball fans lose interest. The die hards will be there through all 162 regardless what happens, but the 2025 season is where the casual fans make their triumphant return to tuning into Red Sox Baseball.

After finishing .500 (81-81) in 2024, the Red Sox have made headlines throughout the course of the winter. There is a buzz around the team and that is not going unnoticed. Pair that with the fact there is no Patriots football and the Bruins might be the least appealing team in the city right now. So unless you are a Celtics fan hoping for the next banner, Red Sox baseball should be appointment television.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited and buy into the hype. If you’ve been a casual baseball fan, here is why you should hop on the Red Sox express and enjoy the baseball season.

The Front Office Got Aggressive

For the last two seasons, the Red Sox have been right around the wild card picture. Clearly they needed reinforcements to help get them over the hump. The front office did virtually nothing and even last season, the additions they did add ended up being a major flop. This led to an eventual frustrated Rafael Devers and even former closer Kenley Jansen speaking out against the front offices inactivity. Welp casual fans far and wide, welcome to the party because the  front office did the unthinkable.

This offseason has been one win after another. The front office said “enough is enough” and made the right moves to be competitive. After not landing Max Fried, they went out and immediately got the next best thing. The Red Sox did dip into their deep prospect pool and landed a legitimate ace of the rotation in Garrett Crochet. Last season was his first true season as a starter, but he delivered on all accounts. He has a nose for the zone and is a strikeout machine. Not to mention, he hit 101 MPH in his last spring training outing.

The biggest key to trying to shift the culture is adding caliber winners. Coming into the fold is Walker Buehler, who’s had the luxury of pitching big and meaningful games for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He bolsters the rotation and becomes a pillar of what they are building. A rotation featuring Crochet, Houck, Buehler, Bello, and Giolito is something to be happy about.

The biggest add of them all sent me on cloud nine for an entire week and that was adding Alex Bregman. He checks all the boxes, from being an elite defender to being a stable right handed bat that can mash at Fenway Park. And most importantly becomes a leader in the clubhouse.

The hype with the Red Sox roster is real and it’s warranted. Not only should the casual fans want to tune into the roster due to the major additions, the youth is appointment television.

The Youth is Coming and It’s Promising

There is no shortage of talent in the Red Sox pipeline. Quinn Priester and Richard Fitts are legitimate depth options and have shown growth this Spring Training. Each is vying for that fifth starter role with the injury to Bello and there’s enormous upside with everyone’s game. But the biggest upside to really tuning into this team is the future and it lies with the Big Three.

They are not just the best prospects in the system, but also across the league. Roman Anthony is the top prospect in the sport and has an enormous blend of power and bat speed. He has gotten on base each game he’s played in this spring and is hitting .308 with an .885 OPS. Kristian Campbell has not had the sexiest spring, as he has only two hits, but everyone knows what he can do at the plate. He is a special talent and his bag absolutely cranks. His climb across the minor league levels in 2024 was turning heads. Campbell hit .362 and with an eye opening 1.045 OPS in 56 games before getting a small sample size in Worcester. Buy into that hype and put enormous stock into him.

The biggest bright spot has been Marcelo Mayer. Mayer has been great this spring, showing his display of raw power, highlighted by a 103 MPH exit velocity off of Jack Flaherty. Mayer has almost hit for the cycle this spring and has shown his true potential when he’s healthy. In what will likely be a year starting in Triple A, Mayer is going to be a treat to watch.

The future of this team is bright and this also includes guys like Hunter Dobbins and Luis Guerrero. The present of this team is even more special and in a wide open American League, the Sox can go the distance.

Casual fans, welcome aboard explorers and hop on the train while it’s still at the station.
