Rough Start for Luis Ortiz in Cleveland Guardians’ 9-6 Loss to Milwaukee Brewers
Luis Ortiz is not on the bubble for a pitching job with the Cleveland Guardians, but his debut couldn’t have gone worse.
Ortiz surrendered six runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated Cleveland 9-6 on Tuesday in Goodyear, Ariz.
Cleveland acquired Ortiz in the offseason in a double-trade scenario involving Toronto and Pittsburgh.
The Guardians traded Gold Glove second basemen Andres Gimenez to the Blue Jays for Spencer Horwitz.
Before the outfielder could pick a jersey number, Cleveland traded him to Pittsburgh for Ortiz.
The Guardians need Ortiz to solidify the rotation while Shane Bieber recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Hopefully, Ortiz won’t have a 40.50 ERA when the games count.
REMEMBER ME?
Jake Bauers played first base for the Cleveland Indians in 2019 and 2021. He hit a three-run homer off Ortiz in the top of the first.
The Guardians came back with two runs in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded single by Tyler Freeman.
He is off to a hot start, and he became the latest player to start at second base in that competition.
Milwaukee shortstop Cooper Pratt’s bases-clearing double increased the Brewers’ lead to 6-2 and knocked Ortiz out of the game.
BAZZANA BOMB!
Travis Bazzana, the Guardians’ No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, smashed a 443-foot homer to center field in the ninth inning.
Whoever wins the second base job this spring may just be keeping it warm for Bazzana. He is rising through the minor leagues quickly.
