Why A US/World All-Star Format Wouldn’t Work, And How The NBA Could Fix The ASG
The NBA All-Star Game has caught much scrutiny over the last few years and rightfully so after the many format changes.
Once again, 2025 saw a new style to which Shaq, Chuck, and Kenny from Inside the NBA picked squads of All-Stars to play in a tournament with the winning team from the Rising Stars Challenge.
As soon as Shaq’s OG’s took down Charles Barkley’s team, instantly people started to think of new formats for the All-Star Game.
Players such as the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo fielded interest in having a USA vs World All-Star Game.
It’s important to establish the fact that more and more elite NBA talent is coming from outside of the US.
With stars like Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and others, there is no doubt the world would be able to win a game against the US.
However, doing a USA vs World format would leave some of the All-Star level American players off rosters.
Instead, there are plenty of ways to spice up a traditional East vs West format and put a little something up for grabs.
Since the main complaint of the All-Star Game is that many players don’t put forth a competitive effort, why not make something at steak?
If the NBA were to follow the way of the old MLB format and make the winner of the All-Star game have a homecourt advantage, competitiveness would rise.
Going back to an East vs West would keep the traditionalism of the Game and preserve the weight of All-Stars in a historical context.
Overall, there is no doubt that something needs to change in the NBA All-Star Game but the answer isn’t as far-fetched as you would think.
