Tiger Woods TGL snafu provides levity for the struggling Jupiter Golf Club

Some golf purists despise the new TGL indoor golf league. They don’t view it as golf, even though it was never advertised as a substitute for a 72 hole format, and therefore will never give the product a chance to be what it is designed to be.

Entertainment.

Purists aside, the TGL had one of their biggest weeks of the season this past week with a triple header on President’s Day (Monday) and a marquee matchup featuring Tiger Woods and the Jupiter Golf Club on Tuesday in prime time Tuesday. The inaugural season of the TGL is coming to a close, and these matches should be both enjoyable and fun to watch.

When people think of Tiger Woods, however, they likely don’t also think of the word fun. They could think of hard work, determination, and a million other adjectives to describe one of the game’s greatest players, but fun is not usually one of those words used to describe Tiger Woods.

Then there are moments which something like the TGL could only provide. A place, and a format, where all can be said, and heard, for the world to consume. In this case, on Tuesday evening we all got an opportunity to see Tiger do something we never got to see during his prime playing days, and that is make a major snafu on the course.

Let me lay the groundwork of the scene for you before watching the below clip. Tiger’s Jupiter Golf Club was struggling, which has become the norm this season, and it was Tiger’s turn to play. He asks Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner, his playing partners, how far the shot was. Their response was, “99”.

Woods doesn’t realize they are referring to 199 yards, and he grabbed his 56 degree wedge and hit the ball 100 yards. As you can imagine, it was an embarrassing moment to watch the ball land nearly 100 yards short of the target, but also a hilarious moment for the struggling team.

Check out the video below and you can hear the early exchange between Tiger and his teammates:

Jupiter Golf Club would go on to lose 10-3 to the New York Golf Club, and their season-long struggles continue. Woods’ team is currently outside of the playoff picture in the TGL, and would be a big disappointment if the man who helped build the league couldn’t elevate his tea into vying for the SoFi Cup.

There is still time, but currently both Jupiter Golf Club and Boston Common Golf, Rory McIlroy’s team, are on the outside looking in for postseason play.

Tiger’s team only has two matches remaining in the regular season, and the next match is against the currently undefeated Bay Golf Club. If they stand a chance, they’ll have to make a move in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Tiger provided a memorable moment for golf fans everywhere Tuesday night, just not the type of golf memory we are used to seeing from the 15-time major championship winner.
