WWE Elimination Chamber: Taking It to the Extreme
The WWE presented two Elimination Chamber matches in 2006. One had a shocking ending, while the other was filled with “extreme” weapons.
John Cena defended his WWE title at New Year’s Revolution 2006, one year after the previous chamber match.
His challengers were Kurt Angle, Shawn Michaels, Carlito, Kane, and Chris Masters.
Cena and Michaels started the match, followed by Carlito, Angle, and Masters.
Angle trapped Cena in an ankle lock, but Michaels drilled Angle with the Sweet Chin Music superkick and pinned him.
Kane came in last, but he lost to a double-team effort by Carlito and Masters. Carlito hit a Diamond Cutter to eliminate Michaels.
Chris Masters placed Cena in the Master Lock full nelson, but Carlito rolled up Masters for the pin. Cena did the same to Carlito to retain the title.
But wait! Vince McMahon showed up to announce that the first Money in the Bank winner, Edge, was cashing in the contract for his title shot.
Edge hit a pair of spears on Cena to win his first WWE championship.
This began the long tradition of the Money in the Bank briefcase holder taking advantage of an exhausted or injured champion to win the belt.
EXTREME CHAMBER
Later in 2006, ECW became the official third brand of WWE. It presented the December to Dismember pay-per-view.
The main event was an Extreme Elimination Chamber. Each wrestler who was waiting in a pod had a weapon to use when he emerged.
Rob Van Dam and Hardcore Holly started the match. Next up were CM Punk with a chair and Test with a crowbar.
RVD eliminated Punk after a five-star frog splash. Test eliminated Holly with a big boot.
Bobby Lashley came out with a table and later speared Test for the pin. This set up a showdown with ECW champion The Big Show, who had a barbed-wire baseball bat.
Lashley eventually speared Big Show to capture the ECW title.
This was the final ECW pay-per-view. The brand contributed matches to the WWE PPV shows for the next few years.
NXT finally replaced ECW as the third brand in early 2010.
